Desires, Wants & Needs: Understanding Thought’s Role in What We Crave

We all have desires, wants, and needs that influence our behavior and decisions. But through the lens of the Three Principles—Mind, Consciousness, and Thought—we see that many of these desires are shaped by our moment-to-moment thinking. The things we crave or feel we need can shift as our thinking shifts, revealing that they are not as fixed or essential as they often seem.

Thought and the Nature of Desire

Desires arise from the thoughts we give energy to. We may want something one moment, and the next, it no longer holds the same appeal. This happens because desires are simply the product of thought. When we see them for what they are—transient and fluid—we stop feeling so driven by the need to fulfill them to feel whole or satisfied. Understanding that thought creates desire frees us from chasing after things we think will make us happy.

The Difference Between Wants and Needs

There is an important distinction between what we want and what we truly need. Our wants are often shaped by personal preferences or insecure thinking, while our needs are basic requirements for survival and well-being. Through the clarity offered by the Three Principles, we gain a deeper understanding of which desires are based on genuine needs and which are merely temporary thoughts. As our thinking settles, we become clearer about what really matters.

Mind and Inner Fulfillment

True fulfillment doesn’t come from satisfying our every want or desire—it comes from connecting to the deeper intelligence of Mind. When we trust in the wisdom of Mind, we stop feeling so attached to our desires, realizing that peace and contentment are always available to us, regardless of whether we get what we think we want.

Conclusion

Desires and wants are shaped by thought, and they are constantly changing. By understanding the role of thought in creating these desires, we become less attached to fulfilling them and more in tune with the deeper sense of fulfillment that comes from within.

Pransky & Associates

In 1976, George and Linda Pransky stumbled on a new way of helping people that was radically different from the traditional counseling methods they had been using in their work. The new principles they were learning had a huge impact on their personal lives, their relationship, and the way they worked with their clients. They began to teach these principles to their clients and became pioneers in a new field of psychology that profoundly changed people in a short amount of time.
